Hello,

Excellent website!

Could anyone please help identify the following. I am told it is a cake knife with a green coloured bone handle (at least, I'm pretty sure it's not plastic, when comparing it to the '40's era stuff in the cutlery drawer).

Apologies for the photo quality, if they're hopeless, I'll have another go.

Anyway, I'm curious as to the age etc of this, as I rather like it and would like to collect items of a similar era/type. There is a marking on the back of the blade, but it is quite worn (pic 1) and I can't make it out. There's another marking on the collar between the handle and blade (pic 2). It doesn't show well, but the top edge of the blade is serrated.

Any advice/info greatly welcome.

I can't make anything of the mark on the blade either, but the ferrule is silver and has a Sheffield hallmark with the date letter for 1922. The maker's mark JY is that of Yates Brothers of Eldon Street, Sheffield.

Any idea if this is a cake knife, or just a nicely decorated "general" knife?

Apologies if this is a daft question, I'm a bit new to all this.

It looks like a cake knife, but it depends on the size. 10 inches or longer is definitely a cake knife.
