12 DWT

Just received a big box of silverware, not sure if it is sterling or real silver. Found 12 DWT on alot of the silverware just wondering what this stands for. Can you help?

Hi there dwt is the abbreviation for pennyweight which is one twentieth of a troy ounce. Often pawnbrokers would scratch the weight on the base of a silver article taken in pawn.
Hope this helps.

this looks like it is stamped on the silver. How can we tell if it is true silver or silver plated? We are very new to all this.

12 DWT in this case is almost certainly an indicator of silver plate. It refers to the amount of pure silver used to plate a given number of items (normally 12).
