Mystery "jam spoon?"

Hello,

Could I ask for assistance and suggestions in identifying a small (5.375" and .5 oz.) sterling spoon (3 photos below)? It is marked “Sterling” on the handle back, otherwise there are no markings at all.

It is very simple, seems even primitive in design: the spoon bowl has been created separately and is attached to the handle. I have no idea of its age/period, style, or possible maker, other than American. The only indication of period is the monogram, BMD, which was my grandmother, born in 1877. Presumably it could be older though.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
