what do these symbols mean?

I have about a dozen or so of spoons similar to these in varying sizes, the largest measuring 12*. Some are French and some English–all from the late 1700’s to early 1800’s,
All of the spoons, no matter the country of origin, have a quadrate cross symbol along with a mythical animal which sometimes looks like a phoenix, sometimes a griffin, and sometimes an unidentifiable creature, although all of them are very similar.
My question is-what do these symbols in combination mean–a coat of arms, family crest, something religiously significant, or something else? I surely would appreciate any help on this one and thanks!
