Hi everyone. Hoping someone is able to help me identify what this box is used for. Looks to be a warming device maybe....

I have not a clue. It's from the late 19c

Many thanks

I have seen similar things which are pen rest and ink well combinations. I guess you don't have anything there which could double as an ink well, The padding infers that something should be soaked - a spirit and wick for a burner perhaps. Can you access the lower compartment?

I have had a message to the effect that this is a heater for hair curling tong. The curling tongs rest on the forks while the heat from the burner heats them up.

Thank you so much! Sorry for the slow reply as I have been away for Chinese New Year.

I've learnt something new today. Haha.

Many thanks
