Please let me know if you know anything about this item. My mother has had this a long time but can't recall when she got it or how. Please if you have any informations about this item or markings I would love to hear them.

This is an electroplate mark of Atkin Brothers of Sheffield.

Thank you for your comment, I've been doing some research and debating wether to clean it up or leave it as it is. It has some sentimental value and it would be a nice surprise to have this on the mantle. But I just don't know if it's worth the resources to do this.

My suggestion would be to clean it, but use only relatively gentle methods such as a good quality, non-abrasive silver polish. As electroplate has only a very thin layer of silver on the base metal it is advisable to avoid removing too much of it. Silver and silver plate are both intended to look shiny unlike bronze where a patina improves the look.

When it is clean it would be better not to leave it exposed to a free atmosphere for too long as it will just start to oxidise again.
