apple corers---too small??

hi----i see 19th century english apple corers in silver—sometimes the silver “corer” unscrews and fits inside of a silver or ivory tube so it is then quite small and fits in your pocket

my question is that thes corers are very short----the “working” part (not including the handle) maybe less then 3 inches-----certainly too small to core any of the apples in my house!-----how do these work? were apples smaller last century? or are these not really for coring but to remove the foul parts of the apple as has been suggested??

                                     thanks for all help ]ricky
