I need help with the maker’s mark. I know it’s Dutch, and probably somewhere around 1850. But does anyone recognise the maker’s mark? Looks like JH, maybe?

Yes but what?

Dutch sterling ofr even .833 or lower hallmarks generally include the Minerva head for duty, the lion for silver, a year letter for the date, (both missing) and a maker’s mark, which in this case maybe two initials inside a six-sided punch: J something. “H”?

The Netherlands’ national system was established in 1814. After which Minerva date letters showing the regional assay were theoretically superfluous?

And that red rust might be copper wearing through.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking too. Could the bottom one be NL62? NL for Netherlands maybe.

Thanks for the info. Oh, it’s not rust, it’s just the reflection of the camera, but I can see how it might look like rust in the picture :grinning:

I don’t know if I’m right. I’m probably wrong, but I’m trying to provoke others into action.

I think you’re spot on with the date and the A for Amsterdam! And probably the NL62 as well. I just can’t figure out what the NL62 stands for. Or what the makers mark is. It looks like JH, but can’t find anything on that. Or JK either. Frustrating.

KC, examine the item carefully for the year mark. See below:

Holy crap, you did it!! Wow, I am really impressed  Hats off to you, my friend. I haven’t been able to find a year mark, but I will fire up the old microscope again tonight and have another look. But the most important thing was the maker’s mark and you found it! If we lived in the same country, I’d buy you a drink. Thanks again! :folded_hands:

Dear friend, have a little faith in my efforts, dictated by persistence and a thirst for knowledge, not applause and fame. Those who do nothing never make mistakes. I am constantly learning from you. I bow before your knowledge. And even the smallest word of appreciation is a distinction and an honor for me.

Hey, I just checked the purse again, but there is no year mark. And no lion mark either. I think maybe the 89 above the JN indicates the year - 1889. That seems like the most logical conclusion. It doesn’t even really matter - I’m still so happy that you found the maker, thanks again! :star_struck:
