I am thoroughly confused. The way I understand it is that if not marked, then the item is either fake or plated.
Well, after polishing and finding no markings I used two different size strong magnets to test for purity and the result was the same with both. The magnet just slid off.
So could they be authentic sterling or not, and who made them?

It is highly unlikely that sterling, or solid silver of any purity, would be unmarked so it is safe to say that your candlesticks are almost certainly plated. Do remember that not all base metals are magnetic.
Without any marks it is not possible to give details of origin or age.
