Hi, I wonder if anyone can help tell me more about this hallmark please? A colleague, a self confessed non-expert, thought it might be from quite a short period of time. For background it is on a very large tray measuring about 66cm across. Thank you
It is a London sterling silver hallmark with the date code B for the assay year 1837/38. The maker’s mark is that of Edward Barnard & Sons.
The reference books say that because Victoria became queen in 1837 an assay mark with a William IV duty mark can be dated to between 29th May 1837 and 20th June 1837. However I am sure that the references are wrong as I have never seen a Victoria duty mark with an 1837/38 date letter. I would therefore be very dubious about dating your tray to those 3 weeks.
