Help with makers mark on 18th c lidded coin beaker - (Russian ?)

Dear members,

i have for years a silver gilt lidded coin beaker with several Russian coins an tokens from Peter I, Catharina, Anna (13 Russian) and one Leopold I Thaler from 1692 in the lid. The beaker has a makers mark IME and an engraved number 88 and other engraved markings. My guess is that the beaker was made of 88 zolotnik but that is a wild guess. Does anyone recognize the maker ? Many thanks , Siep

It’s only a guess…

Hello Bartholomew,

Thank you for the quick reply and the hallmark does look much the same. Very well found. The beaker however is older than 1820 to my opinion. The coins / tokens are from the 1720-1730’s and I expect the beaker to be not from the 19th c. Looking closer the hallmarks seems to be an overstruck and looking at the cartouche / outline it appears to be a different one. Maybe Jhon M Etches put his mark over the other ? It is also a big guess from my side. Thank you again, Siep

U welcome, Siep! I also think the sign is over-stamped. Our specialists should comment on similar practices as my knowledge is limited.
