Hoping you can help with this Hallmark

I live in Australia and my grandmother gave me what I a locket (which looks like it holds a coin). I have been researching the Hallmark but are no closer to working this out. The engraving on the outside is “to D S from W C 27th Oct 1884”

Your locket is actually a sovereign case, made to hold gold sovereigns, and would probably have been attached to a watch chain. Your last picture shows a partial London hallmark with the date letter I for the assay year 1884/5 and the maker’s/sponsor’s mark of Sampson Mordan & Co. Somewhere else on the case there should be another partial hallmark with the London uncrowned leopard’s head and duty marks, probably with another SM mark.

Phil

Thanks so much Phil, this is fantastic. To have the year confirmed and the maker is a great start. It is something I will treasure so I am very interested to learn as much as I can about it.

I did look all over the case for any other marks, the back appears to be blank and unless there is something under the spring loaded disk inside I can’t see anything else.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your quick response too xx
