Ive recently obtained a silver kilt pin it has the intials JF SILVER INS could this makers mark be John fraser of inverness . Would appreciate it if anyone is familiar with his work could verify please
I would say that John Fraser is highly likely. Richard Turner’s book Illustrated Directory of Scottish Provincial Silversmiths & Their Marks lists a Fraser mark described as “JF (incuse), INS (incuse), silver” with Fraser’s working dates given as 1857-1866.
Turner also lists another JF (incuse) mark as John Fraser working from 1960 which I consider (from the state of the “SILVER” mark on your kilt pin) to be a more likely candidate. This is the mark of John Fraser Silvercraft of Castle Street, Inverness. I have seen this JF mark with Edinburgh hallmarks 1963-1994.
