Hi, wanting to confirm the details of this serving spoon. Has been in the family for decades, but we don’t have any background from where / when. Thx.
JOHN GILBERT
JOHN GILBERT & CO LTD
JOHN GILBERT & SONS
Birmingham & London
Active from 1812 as ‘Old Sheffield’ maker. The firm was listed at 28 Legge Street,7 & 8 Bath Rw and 83-85 Ryland Street, Birmingham. In 1865 was listed as silversmith and electroplater at Ryland Street North, Birmingham with office at 25 Ely Place, Holborn, London. In c. 1880 the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style of John Gilbert & Co Ltd. Not yet enlightened relationships with Joseph Gilbert and the attribution of marks is hypothetical. Probably both companies descend from the J.Gilbert who registered an OSP mark in 1812 and were managed by branches of a family who maintained for a while the activities at the common address in Ryland Street, Birmingham.
… and just to confirm - this is definitely electroplated.
Thank you for the detailed response.
Likely year based on maker marks ?
Thank you.
1900 +/- 30 years. Electroplate is almost always undateable.
