I’m a fan of Robert Cruickshank. He was part of the small coterie of Montreal smiths who were trained as artisans and grew rich keeping the parlours of the Quebec fur traders furnished with implements for the table and church silver.
Another site claims him as an Aberdeen smith active from the dying gasp of the 18th century for thirty years. Well he was but not in Aberdeen where, yes he might have been born.

But Anglo-Canadian he never was. As our early city buildings remind students of architecture, it was the French and the Scots who built this country. The Anglos were busy squabbling amongst themselves down in the 13 Colonies.
