A quick question...

Hi all:

I have some Reed & Barton mint julep glasses that just say Reed & Barton and the numbers 256 on the bottom. Does this mean they are silver or silverplate? I know it may sound like a stupid question, but I can’t find any information. The other Reed & Barton pieces that I have all say either STERLING or EPNS.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers ~ Lizzy

Lizzy - Reed & Barton made both sterling (mostly) and silverplated items and I’ve only seen a very few sterling items they made, all very old (1860’s for example), that did not have the word “sterling” on them. Most of their silver palted ware did not have any indication that it was silver plated such as “EPNS” ,just lacked the word “sterling”.

Thanks as usual for joining us here on silver-collector.com. The way things are going to hell in a handbasket here I’m seriously considering applying for Jonathan & Daniel’s job in London…Best Chinese food we have ever had was at a place named the Mandarin Kitchen on Queen’s Way, still drool over the thought.
