A tough one for you (at least for me). I’ve just bought an antique sugar tongs which I thought was British because of the lion but now I have a doubt as there is no city mark neither date mark… let me know what you think! Many thanks in advance
“That’s a lion passant which indicates it’s sterling silver (UK). Yes, there’s usually other hallmarks, including a town assay mark and a year made mark, but sometimes the makers didn’t get them assayed to avoid paying duty on them (or they may have been in their own collection). These look like they were made by Stephen Adams I who was a silversmith in London from 1770 to 1812 (it looks like his makers mark). Given the spoons are stamped on the stem, I’m guessing they may have been closer to 1770 - hallmarks tended to go closer to the handle later on, but it may have been a client request to put them lower down as well. Either way, you could test them to be sure, but I’d bet they are silver.”
