Or to ask your question another way; does having 2.3 microns of silver on a sheet of brass materially increase your net worth position over having say two microns of silver on the same sheet of brass if it was only single or double plated?
As has been said here before several times, the cost of the energy to recover the few micron of silver off any plate would not pay the electricity bill to provide the energy to do it.
Sliver plate is sort of like a picture of a Renoir. Or a really good hand drawn copy. It might look the same, but it is worth pennies on the dollar if you can find somebody on Ebay silly enough to pay you those pennies.

So why do people buy plate and why do some people, having handed over some fairly serious coin to acquire it, insist on burdening their descendants with it? Honestly it’s a mystery to me.
And I even once bought a pencil drawn copy of Renoir, so if anybody can explain the urge to buy bling it should be me, right?
