Please help me identify the symbols on this item. They are on a set of forks.
Alas, it appears that “RJS” is one of those silverplate makers who hasn’t been identified. Try this link, scroll up a few lines, and you’ll see precisely the same set of marks.
The other symbols mean nothing. They’re not sterling silver hallmarks. Marks on silverplate are unregulated - the makers can put almost anything they want on their pieces, usually to make them seem more “special” than they really are.
The only thing one can say with some certainty is that the piece dates from before 1896. After that date, using a crown symbol on anything other than hallmarked Sheffield sterling became illegal.
