The mark is probably a journeyman’s mark. In a large workshop the master would employ a number of workers who had completed an apprenticeship and were working towards becoming masters themselves. These were the journeymen and, as they would probably be paid for what they produced themselves (piecework), they would put thier own mark on their output.
