Ive recently obtained a silver brooch by the maker
Arthur johnson smith and the chester hallmarks. But i cannot match the date letter clearly. I know the makers mark was registered from 1895 & used till 1912. But would like to match the date letter
Tough one. Can you provide a sharper image? I agree with Chester, and with Arthur Johnson Smith. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say it’s the “E” of 1905.
My guess would also be 1905. But it could still be C, 1903.
Phil1, you have fallen into the trap of thinking that big and close-up is better whereas, for identification purposes, clear and in-focus, even if smaller, is what we need.
I must also point out that the dates you have taken from my web site are dates for which I have seen the mark and do not represent absolute working dates. For example we know from seeing Smith’s marks with Birmingham hallmarks that he was still working into the 1920s.
