Does the word "silver" mean it's sterling?

Simple answer: no. Sterling is a specific grade of silver, 925/1000, with the remaining portion made of some other metal, typically copper. Other grades are available. In this case, with no obvious other marks, it could mean any grade of silver - or it could be company name. To determine whether it is silver and of what standard you should have it properly tested.

Thank you very much. Someone had told me it might be older Chinese or Japanese and that they sometimes marked only the word, “silver”. It sounds like testing is the only way to know for sure. Thanks again!
