Elkington Plate possibly 1910?

Hello all,

I’m new here so thanks for the help. I recently picked this up at the thrift store and was looking for help to date it. I used Silvercollection.it and it looks to be 1910 but I want to make sure that I’m not missing something.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I agree that 1910 is the best match for the date letter. Note that Elkington was virtually alone in using any sort of dating system for its plate - silverplate from most makers can’t be dated with any assurance!

The “Y” could also be 1884, but that early, Elkington was still using a crown as part of its maker’s mark. That became illegal after 1896, so the lack of a crown on your piece further reinforces the idea that it’s 1910.

That was my thinking too. I almost thought it was 1884 at first until I saw it had no crown. Thanks for thinking it through with me. Do you know what the other markers are about? The 3 and 33?

No clue about those. Markings like that were usually internal control numbers - pattern numbers, set numbers, something to identify the retailer for whom the items were being made, and so on. Their meanings are generally lost in the mists of time.
