Gold ring marked X

Friends, to properly photograph the inner marking on a ring is the very devil with technology such as mine. This is the best I can do.

The left mark is an x in a square shield. The x does not really resemble a specific font - it’s just an x like when you play noughts & crosses. The 18 is clear enough, supposedly the gold purity. The D is upper case, centred in a square shield with corners lopped off.

Do these marks make any sense, friends? Please advise!

I do believe the ring is gold though - not like on another occasion some weeks ago when a friend wanting to know what his inherited ring was worth. I said “I’ve never seen gold looking like this!” What do you mean? he asked. When I told him his ring was brass, he could not believe it.:joy:

Thanks for the reply, Bart, but I’m afraid there’s no connection. My ring is plain, no diamond cluster, no platinum.

Sorry Bart. Impatiently as always, I decided not to keep it and let the ring go back to its owner. But the full pic would have shown a very ordinary smooth ring with no ornamentation whatsoever and with what I have shown being the only marks on the inside. Do you think the “X” can be explained at all?

This “X” has an unusual shape…
