After some thought and renewed research, I concluded that Thomas Johnson II was the creator.

Thomas Johnson is certainly a good suggestion, Bart. He was registered as a smallworker and I have seen his mark on a walking cane mount. I fear though that my imagination is not really good enough to see either TJ or the oval shape. However I defy anybody to come up with something better!

Alexander Moss wrote a useful book; “A visual history of walking sticks and canes” which seems to be out of print. I managed to access a copy. That reminded me that Sangsters probably produced more silver-knobbed military swagger sticks and parade canes than anybody else in the 19th century. Where the silver is sterling or gilt Alexander Sangster’s initials appear sometimes in a shield.

This exhibited example appears to be a generic knobbed malacca cane without any regimental marks or if they are they are not shown.
