Help identifying tankard age please

Hi
I received this tankard many years ago from my late grandfather. I was hoping to try and get some more information about when it might have been made. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to identify the marks underneath, and have only succeeded in figuring out crown an A1  really struggling with the (what looks like) owl.
Any ideas at all please?
thanks

The EP at top means that it’s electroplated (not sterling). The A1 is usually what silverplate makers use to identify their best grade of plating (thickest, mostly). The somewhat rubbed TL over EM is for Thomas Latham and Ernest Morton, Birmingham, and they used that strange mark at the bottom. Not sure what it’s supposed to be - looks like a ghost!

The crown tells us only that it’s before 1895. After that date, it became illegal to use a crown mark on anything other than sterling. ETA: And since Latham and Morton formed their partnership in 1866, your tankard falls somewhere between 1866 and 1895, which fits perfectly with the Victorian style.

They also used a mark that looks more like an owl, so I think your initial “guess the animal” was correct!

thanks so much Jeff, really helpful!

Was gonna say it looks like Casper :ghost:

That’s exactly what my first reaction was.

You’re welcome! Fill it with something substantial - a good porter or stout - and toast your grandfather’s memory.
