I have a silver item (may be a cake server). It is a Mappin & Web Prince’s Plate (triple plated). From what I understand you can tell the date by the letter in the shield (please see photograph), which in this case is a letter W. I have tried to find a chart with all the dates on, but not had any luck. Can anyone help please?
Thank you, wow a lot to read there. From what I understand the dates of Prince’s plate are different from the dates of Mappin & Webbs standard silver plate. I found this (please see screenshot taken from the link you sent me) which if you count back from 1926 for Z, makes my piece 1923. Please tell me if I’m completely wrong though .
I think that you may be right with 1923. A word of caution though - the dates in that topic should be taken as “best guesses” rather than gospel truth.
I suspect that there are no “reliable” sources. As suggested in the other forum an ex-employee of M&W could have the answer, but I think that is highly unlikely…
