Help with hallmarks?

Using Microsoft’s Ai, uploaded your pic and this piece was made by Robert Hennell in London, 1827, crafted in sterling silver, and bears the official duty mark of King George IV.

This is why relying on AI is sometimes not a good idea. The date letter for 1807 is an uppercase M, whereas the date letter for 1827 is a lowercase m:

The date letter on the piece in question is clearly uppercase. Second, the assay town mark is a crowned leopard, not a crown-less one. Third, the monarch’s hairstyle is clearly that of George III, not George IV, which further confirms the earlier date. Fourth, the earlier lion passant is looking at us - the later one is looking to the left.

All of that, in turn, makes Robert Hennell a poor choice - the dates don’t work.

ETA: Something I’ve been struck by is that AI is still not very adapt at pattern recognition. It doesn’t know what features to look for. The human eye goes straight to things like that. You can feed an image of a company logo to the searchers that has a prominent triangle in one corner, for example, and most of the “matches” don’t have triangles. AI doesn’t understand that that’s important.

Totally agree, but I was unable to copy the table Ai generated with additional info on possible dates.

Just out of idle curiosity, I fed the image to a different AI model, and it was similarly confused, and wandered around in the wilderness. I guided it back to reality, and it ran into the same maker conundrum that we did. When I suggested that the mark might be a rubbed/mangled RG rather than RH, it agreed, and landed on Robert Garrard as a “maybe,” as I had.

That’s the other thing I’ve noticed about AI models. They don’t want to argue with you, and can often be “persuaded” to see things your way. I’ll have to play some more - I suspect some of the models can be talked into agreeing with complete nonsense. biggrin

So are you cited this as an example of AI failure rather than for content? If so, it might be as well to make that clear in the original post otherwise we will erroneously think you are as facile as the AI bot you cite.
