I recently received this candle snuffer in a group of items from an estate auction. So far i have been unable to find anything on the hallmarks. I am thinking that it is silver however I have not been able to identify the marks. Any help with identifying it and dating it will be greatly appreciated.
It’s certainly not British sterling silver - those aren’t sterling hallmarks.
It also doesn’t appear to contain any of the recognized sterling marks of other countries. So, it’s almost certainly silverplate. But without any hint about the maker’s name, identifying it will be a matter of sheer luck. Someone might recognize those pseudo-hallmarks, but with just a few random punches, there’s no place to start the search.
The only thing one can say with some confidence is that, if it’s from the U.K., it dates from before 1896. After that date, using the crown symbol on silverplate became illegal.
Thank you. I appreciate the input. I regularly get items in estate sales that I am unable to find information on and I find the vast wealth of knowledge on sites like this very helpful.
