Dutch silver. The “2” below the lion indicates a fineness of .833 silver. Next is the Minerva head with a “M” on the helmet. This is the duty mark, and the “M” indicates the Schoonhoven assay office.

The manner of manufacture of this well-researched pair of ice or sugar tongs is what distinguishes them from the original tongs made 130 or more years earlier. The springy bit is a single hammered, bent to shape and then pierced bar and the avian claws are added later. You can see the solder marks. Because the claws, the Americans call them eagle claws, are cast rather than hammered they are much more realistic than the original sets would have been.
