Hello Wise Folk! I just purchased this as genuine Old Sheffield Plate. It has the sun stamps of Matthew Boulton & Co, but it doesn’t have the usual tell-tail signs of OSP. It doesn’t have the usual heavy, copper base or silver foil rolled edges.
If it’s a genuine Georgian chamberstick, could it actually be Close Plate… which I know they used for knives, buckles and candle wick scissors? The metal is less than 1mm thick and has the rigidity of steel and there does appear to be seams on the metal edges.
So… were chambersticks ever made using Close Plating (to match candle wick scissors?)… did Boulton ever use this technique… and does this look genuine??
Any thoughts and insights will be greatly appreciated!
