Is this real silver?

Is something marked “silver” real silver?

Thanks

The easiest way to check the authenticity of silver at home is to use a magnet (silver is not attracted to it), the white paper test (it doesn’t leave a dark mark), check the hallmark (e.g., 925), or the ice test (silver conducts heat quickly, melting ice). These methods are quick, but they don’t provide 100% certainty, which only a jeweler can provide.

Thanks, I did the magnet test and it didn’t stick. So can UK silver just have the wording?

I will take it to the jewellers, to get it tested. Thanks

UK silver, in general, must be hallmarked so “silver” is not an acceptable mark unless the piece is below the hallmarking limit (7.78 grams). Therefore if it is silver it is not British.

Just want to add that unfortunately “some” jewellers … not all, sadly can give the wrong advice! I have learnt the hard way with that and even though it was a reputable place I went to, they really took advantage of my situation.

Thank you. Sorry to hear about your experience. I appreciate the input and I totally agree about “some” jewellers. Have a good evening. :slightly_smiling_face:
