Jose Luis Flores moneyclip, date unknown

Hello, recently purchased this and was wondering if this was pre 1948; when the eagle had to be stamped by Mexican law. Any thoughts welcome, regards, Pierre

Hi Pierre.

Thanks for sharing.

That’s seems like an easy one. No eagle so yes, pre 1948 as Flores was one of the makers who campaigned for it. However it is more likely since the registration number is B2 it stands for Borda second workshop and is post 1948 pre-1979. One of the most talented silversmiths of Mexico’s 20th century silver renaissance, Flores created designs that were sold not only under his own name but bore the hallmarks of Miguel Martinez, Emma Melendez and Rubi Ramirez.

His designs were imaginative; the finishing flawless and the appeal remains timeless. He was the genius behind many pieces that came out in the market with Hector Aguilar’s Taller Borda marks. His work is featured in Morrill and Berk’s book on 20th century Mexican silver..
