Ladle hallmarks unknown

Hi can some help identify these hallmarks on this ladle?

That’s a tough one, since the marks are very rubbed. But my money is on London, 1776 - I believe the date letter is a lowercase “a.” And I think the maker is George Smith III.

But I could be talked out of either of those conclusions.

ETA: BTW, I’m more confident about the George Smith III mark. That, in turn, makes me more confident about the date letter. When those things don’t line up, you know you’ve got some part of it wrong. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh, and not a ladle. A ladle would have a deeper bowl - think about how you would serve gravy or soup. This looks more like a berry spoon. Just semantics, of course - still a very nice piece of silver, whatever you call it.

George Smith III - :+1:

The maker is definitely George Smith III but the date letter is T: 1774

Ah, yes. I was assuming the date letter was in the same orientation as the crowned head, but it’s not. Hell, it’s not even in the same orientation as the lion passant!
