Ladle or spoon?

The bowl looks like a ladle but it lays flat like a spoon. Is it a serving spoon or some sort? I have it as london 1828 Phillip phillips, though this seems to be an over stamp. Also note the cool journeyman’s mark. Thoughts? Thanks

You don’t mention the length, but it looks like a sauce ladle.

At that size, I’d say that it’s a sauce or gravy ladle. A soup ladle would be more like 30cm or more. A serving spoon would be more shallow, probably oval shaped, rather than round, and perhaps longer than this ladle.

The double punch for the maker’s mark is a bit of a mystery, but since there’s no way to know what the original one looked like, we can only guess why it’s there. Probably something innocuous, like the first strike was illegible, so the maker took another whack at it.
