This may be a shot in the dark, but I have some silverware pitchers that are stamped with ‘New Cape May Hotel’ on them. Some research shows that this was an African American hotel in NJ from the early 1900’s. They were about to thrown away, but I thought I should see if they have any value first. I’ll try to provide some pictures. Please let me know if you have any information on these pieces. Thanks!
The pieces are silverplate, not sterling. Can’t quite make it out, but in the center of the bottom I see the phrases “Patented something” and “Silver Soldered,” which tells the tale. In short, this is fairly common hotel ware, worth very little. But better to land in a thrift shop than be destroyed.
The name indicates that it’s from the 1930’s - before that, it wasn’t “Richardson’s.” Richardson himself did not exactly cover himself in glory, to say the least. ![]()
Richardson’s New Cape May Hotel
Not sure if the historical context adds anything to the value. Remarkably, the building still stands!
And here’s how it looked somewhat before RIchardson took control. Judging by the car, I’d say early 1920’s:
Thanks for the feedback! I know next to nothing about silver, but I always enjoy the history of items. Maybe I’ll check with the historical society in Cape May.
