No city mark… help!

Hi all!
The is no city mark on this old mustard spoon. Could anyone help?
Thanks!
Remy

I think it’s George Smith (II), London, but the date letter is confusing (shield shape)…
The letter “B” indicates York 1788 or Newcastle 1792.

In my opinion this is definitely a London hallmark with date letter B for 1797. I am sure that the lion passant is neither Newcastle nor York whose lions did not have the cut top corners visible here. London date letters can vary from the “normal” published form and this one, with cut top corners and curved base, is a typical variant. The GS mark certainly looks like one of those used by George Smith (II). My only caveat is the the date is somewhat later (by around 10 years) than I have seen his mark. He did live until at least 1802 though.
