Rearing stag crest "Justice Sans Craint" on gravy spoon handle

Elkington, Mason & Co. silver plate gravy spoon with bridge strainer. I figured out that much. One of the marks is an 8 on an angle, which I think represents the date. But there’s also an “A” separated from the row of marks.

On the handle, a rearing stag and French words that mean Justice Without Fear. I would love to know more about the provenance. And the date, the slanted 8, or the A.

The slanted 8 is Elkington’s code for 1848. There is a useful guide to Elkington date codes here. The “A” which you mention may be a plating standard, A1 being the one most often seen.
