I have gotten as far as figuring out this is Russian. Would like to know more. “84” with side view of head, other stamp is “MG”, these are on the bottom. On the lid inside is MG again and a stamp of a head. Thanks for any info!
The 84 mark is the easier part. It’s one of the first Kokoshnik marks, from 1896-1908, indicating that it’s 84 zolotniki, or .875 pure silver. I can’t make out enough detail to identify the assayer.
ETA: The MG maker’s mark eludes me, however - can’t find it.
Чайница МБ
Белоусов Максим Васильевич - Belousov Maxim Vasilievich.
Assayer: Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin (Иван Сергеевич Лебедкин - ИЛ).
Чайница - teapot.
What is it ?, a Tea Caddy ??? ![]()
I am not sure, but that is my guess.
Чайница - teapot, tea container.
There seems to be a few of these boxes around with the slightly oriental looking chap with a pointed hat;
This has a scrap value of about $US 450.00 based on estimated weight so the ebay price might be a little optimistic.
Also the decoration indicates China which produced tea so it’s a Russian tea katy or caddy.
I suppose if it has been sugar holder it might have had a bunch of people cutting cane or harvesting sugar beets.

The optimistic price might also explain why it’s been listed on eBay for 760 days. ![]()
