I would be very grateful if anybody could provide any information as to the origin of these nutcrackers.I am assuming they are either silver or silverplated but my knowledge in this field is almost zero

The letters read E&Co EP. EP of course stands for electroplate and E&Co is, I think, an Elkington & Co (of Birmingham) mark.
