Stirling Silver And Plated?

Hi,

I have a fish knife and fork set that’s marked EPSN A. I’m sure the ESPN means it’s plated with the A meaning it’s standard quality rather that A1 which is top quality. This is fine, but on the base of the blade and the forks (the very last part that joins onto the handle) it’s stamped Stirling Silver. I didn’t think that it could be both? I thought if something was stamped EPSN then it was plated and not sterling silver.

Can someone clear that up for me?

Thanks a lot.

It is quite normal for the knife blades and fork tines to be electroplated and for the ferrule to be silver. Incidentally the abbreviation is EPNS - electroplated nickel silver.
