Hi and thanks again in advance. So this is London, 1719 Hanoverian spoon. I think the sponsor mark is CO. Checked Phil’s site and looks like Lawrence Cole(s), but 1706 is the last date of his sponsor mark. Did some digging and it looks like his will was probated in January of 1720. So if it’s him he must have banged this spoon out just before shuffling off his mortal coil. Any other possibility besides Mr Cole(s)? Many thanks
The dates on my site are dates for which I have seen the mark and not absolute working dates, as I explain on my “Makers’ Marks” first page. So Lawrence Coles is still a viable candidate.
However your mark does not match Coles’s mark as the O is the same size as the preceding letter (Coles’s mark is Co). In addition the punch shape is not correct for Coles. However I cannot find another mark which matches both the letter configuration and what remains of the punch shape. In addition to CO I have also looked at GO and SO. For now at least I fear that this sponsor/maker will remain a mystery.
Phil
Thanks Phil, serves me right for skipping the prologue. I actually thought the punch shape was quite similar - has the same odd crenelated edges and slightly zany paint splatter shape. Is it possible since this punch is from 1706 that he modified his punch again over the proceeding decade and a half? Thanks again, and thanks for your incredibly helpful site.
