Looks like Edinburgh castle, thistle mark, R - date letter 1972.

Yes - an Edinburgh hallmark and date letter R for 1972. The sponsor’s mark is MG and is the mark of Michael Gill who registered in October 1972 [ref: Edinburgh Assay Office’s Hallmarking Archive]. Gill was working on the Isle of Arran in 1972.

Thanks Phil . another one for you when did he change his hallmark makers mark from a M.G to old English I have been mixing them up with Malcom Gray MG
It was 1972 (5th October) and apparently it was done to avoid confusion with Malcolm Gray’s Ortak mark - so you are not alone in confusion!

Thanks phil i did a bit of research found out he,was on arran from1957 until late seventies he died in 2020 born in england in 1929.

Well i am sorry i caused so much bad feeling towards silvermakersmarks and bartholomew i only ask for help in finding out about a necklace i bought in a auction which had hallmarks i couldnt identify should have stated i only needed the makers marks identification. What a world we are living in today when a few poeple who share the same hobby cannot get on with each other, poor sorry i ask for help know ,but thank you both anyway for helping me …
