Thank you for your reply, and for the link to your item for sale. Are you familiar with the CW mark on my piece? Is it likely silver-plate? What approx. age is a modern one?
I hate to bombard you with so many questions, and if I’m overstepping, I apologize. Just really confusing when I search Google about these.
If your spoon were a sterling antique, it would have proper UK hallmarks. It appears that this spoon has no hallmarks, so it must be silverplate.
Here’s an example of a spoon that does have true sterling hallmarks:
Dating silverplate items is usually impossible. Even identifying the maker can be a challenge. There is no organized system for recording that information, alas.
Great information. Thank you for your expertise. I suspected is might be plate. But I’m happy to have this little example of the style. You certainly don’t see them everyday, and this one’s in my price range! Picked it up at a little multi-dealer shop for 6.00.
Genuine antique sterling would have set you back juuuuuust a bit more.
