I have a cased set of 12 spoons and tongs by Stewart dawson & co ltd dated 1911 London. On every spoon there is an additional mark next to the hallmark which looks like a type of star. I can only think that this is his own personalised mark or something to do with the company going to Australia. Help needed please. Paul.
It’s probably what is called a journeyman’s mark; i.e. the personal signature of the journeyman smith who actually made or was responsible for the spoons.
Many thanks for your help - apparently its also known as a
Tally` mark. Will look into it more. Paul.
