Very Unusual Silver Elephant - Gorham?

Hi All,

I hope that someone can help me. I have a piece that I bought which I am struggling to find out more about.

It is a silver pencil top of an elephant with “Jumbo 1882” engraved on it. I am pretty sure the top is silver - it feels and looks like silverbut it has no hallmarks that I can find.

After researching Jumbo the elephant was sold in 1882 to PT Barnum so I thought it was a possibility it was made in the US.

I have spent a long time looking at silver elehant antiques online and the style does appear to be simialr to Gorham but again I am no expert so not sure that is a correct or not. It is quite heavy for it’s size - weighs 25.5g.

If anyone can shed more light on this piece that would be greatly appreciated.

I think it is a great peice and would love to know more.

Many thanks,
Nathan
